Phoenix Rangers

Finnegans Wake

Phoenix Rangers appear only in a garbled, mock-testimonial passage, where their “nuisance” is linked to a meeting of waitresses and a dispute over trespassing. The allusion gives the organization a place in the text’s noisy social landscape, but supplies no reliable account of its composition or purpose.

Mention in the Gathering

The speaker recalls a meeting attended by waitresses, described through a string of comic labels and names, and refers to the Phoenix Rangers’ nuisance there. In the same breath, the passage invokes park trespassers and an order to stop their trespasses. The compressed phrasing leaves unclear whether the Rangers caused the disturbance, were themselves implicated in the trespassing, or were simply part of the surrounding complaint.

Limits of the Evidence

The account is interrupted by a companion’s repeated questions and replies, and its slang-heavy, unstable wording resists a straightforward reconstruction of events. It does not identify any Ranger by name or explain the organization’s leadership, membership, activities, or relation to the waitresses. The Phoenix Rangers are therefore defined here by a single contested association with disorder at a meeting, rather than by a developed institutional portrait.
